About the role#
The Hartford is offering an 11-week Data Science Summer Internship Program starting in May 2027. This full-time role is designed to help you prepare for a career in data science by working on machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions. You will have the chance to network with our data science community, present to senior leaders, and participate in one-on-one discussions and panels. We provide on-the-job training in insurance, cloud environments, and modeling techniques to support your project work.
What you'll do#
- Build statistical models, machine learning algorithms, and AI workflows to address business needs.
- Review your work with team members and business partners to ensure your results align with expectations.
- Explore new data sources and analytical techniques to help the business.
- Develop tools that support long-term business goals.
- Learn about our internal structures, business processes, and data sources.
- Stay updated on research techniques and new tools relevant to your work.
- Provide statistical and economic support to ensure data accuracy in business decisions.
- Present data-driven insights and model results to various partners.
- Document your work clearly to assist with team knowledge sharing.
What you'll need#
- You must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.
- You are currently working toward a Master's or Ph.D. in Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Quantitative Economics, Actuarial Science, Computer Science, or a similar analytical field.
- Experience building machine learning algorithms and statistical models using Python.
- Ability to explain technical methodologies and visualizations to non-technical audiences.
- Experience maintaining organized project notes, documentation, and version history.
- Preferred: Exposure to cloud-native environments like AWS Sagemaker or GCP Agent Platform.
- Preferred: Understanding of RAG, prompt engineering, agent workflows, and LLM evaluation.
- Preferred: Experience using SQL to navigate databases and extract attributes.
- Preferred: Experience with Unix and Git.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time internship for Summer 2027.
- The role follows a hybrid work model. You will work from the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with remote flexibility on Monday and Friday.
- Office locations include Hartford, Connecticut; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Chicago, Illinois.
