About the role#
Tesla is looking for interns to join the Cell Engineering team for the Winter and Spring 2027 terms. You will work on-site full-time for a minimum of 12 weeks. This program is designed for students currently enrolled in an academic program who want to contribute to projects involving battery cell materials, development, and modeling.
What you'll do#
- Manage material program scope, identify risks, and drive decision making across teams.
- Develop automated cell prototype line equipment and processes to produce cells for material qualification.
- Improve line performance metrics like Cpk and OEE while reducing turnaround time.
- Generate cell lifetime models to predict aging characteristics using large datasets.
- Process test data and optimize model parameters to forecast cell behavior.
- Translate degradation mechanisms into mathematical representations.
- Design and execute experiments, develop test methods, and analyze cell behavior.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an Engineering degree program, specifically Mechanical, Materials, Chemical, or Electrical Engineering.
- Experience with 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks, Catia, CAD, AutoCAD, Revit, or 3DX.
- Proficiency in Python and MATLAB/Simulink for modeling physical systems.
- Knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology, electrochemistry, and data visualization tools like Matplotlib or Plotly.
- Experience with analysis or qualification of cell materials including cathode, anode, and electrolyte.
- First-principle physics understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, power delivery, energy storage, and thermo-fluids.
- Prior research experience in the battery or cell material field.
