About the role#
The Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) maintains Utah's criminal history records and manages the Sex Offender, Kidnap, and Child Abuse registries. This internship provides an opportunity to support the dissemination and maintenance of these records. You will work on-site in a full-time capacity to assist with public services and administrative processing.
What you'll do#
- Provide fingerprinting services to the public using traditional ink and electronic capture devices.
- Perform data entry to update criminal records, including charge and demographic information.
- Research and compile criminal history records to verify eligibility for employment, expungement, and firearm ownership.
- Handle sensitive information with discretion and professional standards.
- Offer customer service via phone, email, chat, and in-person interactions.
- Use the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) for fingerprint comparison and processing.
- Provide technical support for users of the Utah Criminal Justice Information System and related applications.
- Process non-criminal background checks and applications for Utah Concealed Firearm Permits.
- Investigate and process cases for the Sex Offender, Kidnap, and Child Abuse registries.
- Manage petition-based and auto expungement applications.
What you'll need#
- Education or experience in Criminal Justice or a related field.
- Minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute.
- Proficiency with computer navigation and software including Google Sheets, Google Docs, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Ability to interpret and apply Utah statutes, administrative rules, and BCI policies.
- Strong analytical skills for problem-solving and decision-making.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy.
- Capability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational skills to manage workload and meet deadlines.
- Ability to communicate clearly in both written and verbal formats.
- Must pass a comprehensive level II Criminal History background check.
