About the role#
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is seeking students for a full-time Technical Co-Op position in our Building Technology department. This role is based in our Oakland, California office for the Winter 2027 term. You will work alongside experienced engineers to apply your academic knowledge to real-world projects, both in the office and on site.
What you'll do#
- Assist with construction monitoring, field investigations, condition assessments, and site inspections.
- Support project drafting, structural design, and analysis tasks.
- Analyze materials and support petrography staff by developing test protocols, designing testing apparatus, and performing data analysis.
- Collaborate with engineers to conduct reconnaissance on existing structures and monitor construction progress.
- Organize field data and conduct research to support problem solving and repair design.
- Perform analysis using hand calculations and software under the guidance of licensed professionals.
- Assist with the preparation of client deliverables, such as reports, specifications, and construction documents.
- Note that this work may involve travel and working from heights.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Civil Engineering or Architecture program.
- An interest in civil or structural engineering, materials science, and architectural engineering.
- A strong academic record.
- A desire to learn through hands-on work in a consulting environment.
- Enthusiasm for developing sophisticated engineering work products.
- Strong communication skills.
