This position provides engineering support to the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific Communications Division. The role involves contributing to projects related to software-defined radios, SATCOM systems, and other communication initiatives. You will work under the supervision of experienced engineering and scientific professionals to assist with tasks ranging from software development and networking to cybersecurity and test and evaluation. This is a part-time position limited to 20 hours per week.
What you'll do#
- Provide engineering support in Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics.
- Operate Type 1 encrypted military narrowband radios and manage COMSEC protocols during lab experimentation.
- Assist in the implementation of Software-Defined Radios (SDR), MANET radios, and live-streaming sensors.
- Operate and navigate Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) for naval lab exercises.
- Develop software and scripts to automate tactical radio transmissions.
- Use Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) Viewer to assess, implement, and validate system security controls.
- Design training materials for tactical radio and satellite communications and execute system simulations to evaluate SATCOM constraints.
What you'll need#
- Senior-level undergraduate status.
- Coursework in a relevant discipline, with a preference for majors in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or Statistics.
- Documented COMSEC training and qualification to operate Type 1 cryptographic devices.
- Proven hands-on experience with tactical military radios, SDRs, and SATCOM.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
- US Citizenship is required.
Location & details#
- Location: San Diego, California.
- Modality: Hybrid, with the ability to work at NIWC Pacific Bayside upon request.
- Residency: Must reside in California and live within a commutable distance of SDSU at the time of hire.
- Compensation: $19.67 per hour (non-negotiable).
