About the role#
This position provides engineering support for the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific Communications Division. You will work under the guidance of experienced engineering and scientific professionals to assist with software, networking, cybersecurity, and testing projects. This role involves balancing technical requirements with project constraints while contributing to the division mission.
What you'll do#
- Provide engineering support across disciplines including Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics.
- Assist in the implementation of Software-Defined Radios (SDR), MANET radios, and live-streaming sensors.
- Operate and navigate Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) for naval lab exercises.
- Develop software and scripts to automate tactical radio transmissions.
- Use Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) Viewer to assess, implement, and validate system security controls.
- Support training development by designing lectures on tactical radio and satellite communications (SATCOM).
- Execute system simulations to evaluate SATCOM constraints and operational scenarios.
What you'll need#
- Senior-level undergraduate standing.
- Coursework in a relevant discipline, with a preference for Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or Statistics.
- Documented COMSEC training and qualification to operate Type 1 cryptographic devices.
- Proven hands-on experience with tactical military radios and SATCOM.
- Ability to work independently on 90% of task requirements.
- US Citizenship is required to meet Department of Defense regulations.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
Location & details#
- This is a hybrid position, with most work conducted virtually. You must be able to work at NIWC Pacific Bayside upon request.
- Candidates must reside in California and live within a commutable distance from San Diego State University.
- This position is limited to 20 hours per week.
- The hourly rate is $19.67.
