About the role#
Helpline interns work directly with people experiencing domestic abuse. You will learn to recognize abuse dynamics and understand public health issues that intersect with this work. This role involves answering calls on our 24/7 helpline while supporting staff with internal infrastructure projects. Your work will influence our intake procedures, policies, and training programs.
What you'll do#
- Complete a three-day in-person orientation and training program from January 4th to 6th.
- Provide emotional support to callers without bias or judgment.
- Practice trauma-informed active listening skills.
- Connect callers with services and offer referrals to local, state, or national organizations.
- Collaborate with third-party service providers and agencies.
- Handle administrative tasks, including data entry for after-hours case forms and inputting voicemails.
- Maintain and protect the confidentiality of callers, client records, and shelter locations.
- Verify contact information and services for our resource database.
- Participate in staff meetings and provide feedback on the helpline training program.
- Assist staff with ongoing projects and learn new technology platforms.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a 2- or 4-year college or university for an associates or undergraduate degree.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.
- Ability and willingness to learn new technology platforms.
- Demonstrated history of dependability and reliability.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Access to reliable transportation.
- Canva and Adobe skills are a plus.

- Location: Greenville, South Carolina.
- Term: Winter 2027.
- Commitment: 14 weeks, 10 hours per week.
- Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship.
