About the role#
We are looking for a Machine Learning Co-Op to join our Automation and Emerging Technology team. This role focuses on applied machine learning, data-driven experimentation, and model evaluation. You will take ownership of real-world experiments, from problem framing to measuring impact, within a startup-like environment inside our large enterprise.
What you'll do#
- Lead end-to-end machine learning experiments, including problem definition, data exploration, model prototyping, and iteration.
- Develop and evaluate models for prediction, classification, pattern detection, and decision support using enterprise datasets.
- Apply experimental design techniques such as train/validation/test strategies, baseline comparisons, and error analysis.
- Use Databricks for data analysis, experimentation, and scalable ML workflows.
- Define and track success metrics, including accuracy, precision/recall, robustness, latency, scalability, and cost.
- Explore applied AI techniques, including Generative AI and LLMs.
- Document experiments, assumptions, results, and technical tradeoffs.
- Present findings and demos to technical and business stakeholders.
- Apply Responsible AI and data governance practices, including data privacy and bias awareness.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD-track program in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, or a related field.
- Strong proficiency in Python.
- Solid understanding of core machine learning concepts, such as supervised and unsupervised learning, feature engineering, and model evaluation.
- Experience with common ML and data libraries like pandas, NumPy, or scikit-learn.
- Experience with AI tools such as GitHub Copilot.
- Ability to work independently and operate effectively in ambiguous problem spaces.
- Strong analytical thinking and communication skills.
- Preferred: Hands-on experience with end-to-end ML projects, familiarity with Databricks, exposure to Azure cloud-based workflows, experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Hugging Face, and prior research or project experience with measurable outcomes.
Location & details#
- Location: Vernon Hills, Illinois.
- Modality: Hybrid, with a minimum of three days per week on-site.
- Term: Winter 2027 and Summer 2027 (January 2027 to August 2027).
- Compensation: Paid position ($28/hr to $30/hr).
- Status: Full-time.
