About the role#
As a Process and Thermal Performance Intern, you will work with the Core Technology team to support the analysis and development of thermal and fluid systems for high-temperature heat battery technology. You will perform engineering calculations that influence how systems are designed, optimized, and deployed.
What you'll do#
- Support thermal and fluid performance analyses using 1D simulation tools and first-principles hand calculations.
- Assist in sizing and performance evaluation of fluid system components, including pumps, blowers, fans, heat exchangers, and valves.
- Develop and validate steady-state and transient thermal models for energy storage and heat transfer systems.
- Perform pressure drop, flow distribution, and energy balance calculations for ducting networks, piping systems, and process loops.
- Assist in developing and maintaining engineering calculation packages, spreadsheets, and simulation scripts.
- Support test planning by processing raw data, producing performance plots, and comparing results against model predictions.
- Contribute to equipment specification and vendor data review.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Foundational understanding of energy systems, including thermal cycles, heat exchangers, pumps, blowers, and fans.
- Familiarity with 1D thermal-fluid analysis, including mass balances and fluid mechanics principles.
- Exposure to simulation or calculation tools such as AFT, Ebsilon, MATLAB, or Aspen.
- Strong academic record with a genuine interest in clean energy and climate technology.
- Ability to perform unit conversions across SI and imperial systems.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time internship with a rolling term.
- The role is based in Alameda, California, or Orlando, Florida.
- Work modality is hybrid.
