About the role#
This Software Engineering Co-op position is based within the Intelligent Aerospace Technologies Development Sandbox team at Collins Aerospace. You will work on-site in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to explore how Generative AI can improve safety-critical development. This is a full-time, paid opportunity for students to engage in a working mentorship environment.
What you'll do#
- Contribute to new development processes that aim to reduce lifecycle costs and improve reuse for next-generation avionics.
- Design and execute experiments using Generative AI for safety-critical applications.
- Collaborate with engineers on sub-projects and participate in technical discussions.
- Build and test prototype solutions, tools, and workflows within the Sandbox environment.
- Create documentation, demos, and prototype integrations for AI and machine learning technologies.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Advanced STEM degree program, with at least 60 credit hours completed by the start of the co-op.
- Coursework or project experience in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or Generative AI.
- Familiarity with Python development and Linux/Unix environments.
- Experience experimenting with LLMs, Generative AI models, or AI-driven tools.
- Understanding of software engineering basics and exposure to full-stack or API-driven development.
- Familiarity with frameworks like LangChain or Haystack.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a collaborative team.
- Previous internship, co-op, or work experience at RTX.

- Location: Cedar Rapids, Iowa (On-site).
- Term: Winter and Summer 2027 (January through August).
- Citizenship: U.S. citizenship is required for this role.
- Employment: Full-time.
