About the role#
As a System Monitoring Operations Center Intern, you will maintain the stability and reliability of technology services. You will monitor alerts, triage incidents, and support operational processes within the Security & Monitoring Operations Centre. This role provides hands-on exposure to enterprise monitoring tools and incident management practices. You will help facilitate rapid responses to major incidents by coordinating communications, opening incident bridge calls, and engaging on-call resources. This is a 6-month fixed-term opportunity with the potential to convert to full-time employment.
What you'll do#
- Complete shift start procedures within 15 minutes, including reviewing handover logs and verifying tool access.
- Perform Datadog health checks across infrastructure, network performance, and service maps.
- Monitor PagerDuty, Datadog, and ServiceNow queues continuously.
- Acknowledge PagerDuty alerts within the required SLA and begin triage immediately.
- Follow runbooks to triage incidents and adjust priorities based on business impact.
- Document incident timelines, findings, and actions accurately.
- Coordinate communications and initiate incident response processes for major incidents.
- Engage on-call resources to support incident resolution.
- Complete shift handover logs and confirm status with the incoming operator.
What you'll need#
- Bachelor's degree or recent graduate in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Foundational understanding of networking, operating systems like Windows and Linux, and security principles.
- Basic knowledge of scripting in PowerShell, Bash, or Python for automation and alert setup.
- Ability to follow structured runbooks and defined escalation steps.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with monitoring tools like Datadog, PagerDuty, or ServiceNow is a plus.
- Coursework, labs, or personal projects involving system monitoring or IT support are beneficial.
Location & details#
- Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
- Work Modality: On-site and hybrid.
- Schedule: Primarily weekday shifts with one weekend day per week. Most shifts are 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM, with occasional 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM shifts. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is required.
- Employment: Full-time, 6-month fixed-term contract.
