About the role#
The Orleans Public Defenders Investigator Internship program provides hands-on experience in criminal defense. Interns work alongside staff investigators and attorneys to assist with case preparation for criminal matters in the New Orleans area. This program offers insight into the criminal justice system and the role of public defense in protecting client rights.
What you'll do#
Interns participate in both field and office activities to support case progression. Daily tasks depend on the case stage and investigative requirements.
- Canvass for witnesses and conduct surveillance
- Interview potential witnesses and perform background checks
- Document crime scenes and gather evidence
- Write investigative memorandum
- Prepare trial exhibits
What you'll need#
We welcome students from fields such as Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, and History. You should be responsible, organized, and committed to community service.
- Ability to dedicate 10-15 hours per week during the spring term
- Availability to attend mandatory training on January 23 - 24, 2027
