About the role#
The Orleans Public Defenders Investigator Internship program offers students a chance to assist staff investigators with case preparation for criminal cases in Orleans Parish. You will work on matters ranging from misdemeanors to felonies, providing support that directly impacts the quality of legal representation for our clients. This program is unpaid, though you may be eligible to receive academic credit through your school.
What you'll do#
Interns engage in both field and office activities to support attorneys and staff investigators. Your daily tasks vary based on the stage of the case. Responsibilities include:
- Canvassing for witnesses and surveillance
- Conducting witness interviews and background checks
- Documenting crime scenes and evidence
- Writing investigative memorandum
- Preparing trial exhibits
What you'll need#
We welcome students from fields such as Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, and History. You should possess strong organizational skills and a commitment to community service. Success in this role requires responsibility and good judgment.
- Ability to dedicate 10-15 hours per week during the spring term
- Availability to attend mandatory training on January 23 - 24, 2027
Location & details#
This is an on-site internship based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The program runs during the Spring 2027 term. Please note that fieldwork is a regular part of the role, and access to a vehicle is helpful.
