About the role#
The R&D Designer Internship at nVent offers hands-on experience in mechanical design and drafting. You will support product development projects while working alongside experienced engineers and designers. This role is designed to help you build technical skills and gain practical knowledge of how products move from concept to manufacturing.
What you'll do#
- Create and update 2D drawings and 3D CAD models using SolidWorks.
- Assist with detailing, dimensioning, and preparing drawings for manufacturing.
- Revise drawings and models based on engineering feedback and design changes.
- Learn and apply company drafting standards, engineering practices, and revision-control processes.
- Work with engineers and designers to develop and improve mechanical designs.
- Gain exposure to manufacturing and quality considerations during the design process.
- Participate in design reviews to learn how designs are evaluated for function, manufacturability, and quality.
- Maintain accurate and organized engineering documentation.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in a Mechanical Drafting, Mechanical Design, CAD Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or related degree program.
- Completed introductory coursework in CAD, technical drawing, or mechanical design.
- Basic experience with SolidWorks or a similar 3D CAD system.
- Ability to read and understand basic mechanical drawings.
- Understanding of basic drafting concepts such as dimensions, orthographic views, and section views.
- Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn.
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with others.
- A willingness to ask questions, accept feedback, and take on new challenges.

- Location: Anoka, Minnesota.
- Modality: On-site.
- Employment: Full-time internship.
- Compensation: $25.00 per hour.
- Benefits: Paid time off, paid sick time, paid volunteer time, and paid holidays. Relocation and housing support is available for eligible candidates.
