About the role#
The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) provides legal services to support the mission of NPR. As an extern, you will contribute to the work of the legal team across various practice areas. These include commercial and contract law, nonprofit tax, governance, technology, intellectual property, regulatory matters, First Amendment issues, and labor law. This externship is designed as a learning experience for law students to obtain course credit.
What you'll do#
- Conduct legal research and prepare legal memoranda, contracts, and other legal documents.
- Participate in client meetings, training, and legislative or regulatory meetings.
- Observe legal proceedings.
- Attend legal training sessions offered through the District of Columbia Bar Association or other local organizations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited law degree program (1L, 2L, 3L, or LLM).
- Strong academic credentials and relevant background experience.
- Proficiency in legal research and writing.
- A demonstrated interest in media, technology, or nonprofit fields through school activities, clinics, or prior positions.
Location & details#
- This role is based in Washington, District of Columbia.
- You may work remotely from an approved location, on-site at an NPR facility, or a combination of both.
- The program terms are Winter 2027 (January 11 to May 7) or Summer 2027 (May 10 to August 13).
- This position is unpaid and requires students to obtain course credit through their law school.
