About the role#
As a Histopathology Intern, you will support routine histology workflows and help develop next-generation tissue preparation and imaging techniques. You will work alongside pathologists and histology specialists to evaluate tissue-device interactions. The role focuses on benchmarking, optimizing, and scaling volumetric histology pipelines, including tissue clearing and lightsheet microscopy.
What you'll do#
- Optimize and validate next-generation histology workflows, specifically aqueous and solvent-based tissue clearing and lightsheet fluorescence microscopy for 3D visualization.
- Maintain, calibrate, and operate advanced optical hardware, lightsheet imaging systems, and automated histology equipment.
- Perform routine tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, slide preparation, and staining protocols.
- Document experimental protocols, image acquisition parameters, and data analysis pipelines following laboratory procedures.
- Collaborate with Pathology, Preclinical, and Surgical Engineering teams to prepare samples and acquire high-resolution datasets.
- Manage laboratory upkeep, including reagent preparation, inventory, and disposal of chemical and biohazardous waste.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Biology, Chemistry, or Materials Science.
- Basic understanding of anatomy, neuroanatomy, and light or fluorescence microscopy principles.
- Familiarity with laboratory safety, fume hood operation, and handling biohazardous or chemical materials.
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
- At least 6 months of academic or wet-lab experience handling biological tissues and standard histology techniques.
- Hands-on experience or coursework in tissue clearing protocols and lightsheet fluorescence microscopy.
- Experience with 3D image analysis software or large volume rendering tools like Imaris, ImageJ, or Python libraries.
- Ability to learn new equipment quickly and troubleshoot technical procedures.
Location & details#
- Location: Austin, Texas.
- Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Full-time.
- Compensation: $25 per hour.
- Term: Rolling.
- Physical requirements: Ability to lift and maneuver up to 45 pounds and work in a controlled laboratory environment with potential exposure to chemicals and biohazardous materials.
