    About the role#

    The Nebraska Department of Transportation Materials and Research Division is hiring an intern to assist with geotechnical and materials engineering. You will gain experience through a mix of field work, laboratory testing, and design projects. This role involves supporting the team in maintaining and developing the state highway system.

    What you'll do#

    • Identify and classify Nebraska soils.
    • Document soil explorations and write reports.
    • Help analyze, design, and inventory foundation and retaining structures.
    • Collect in-situ samples of soils and pavements.
    • Participate in project inspections, load testing, and planning efforts.
    • Gain experience with lab testing for soils, aggregate, steel, concrete, and asphalt.
    • Use engineering analysis tools, construction plan reading, and drafting techniques.
    • Assist with department research and other tasks as assigned.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment as a student in Civil, Mechanical, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering, or Architecture.
    • Standing as at least a three-fourths student in good standing.
    • Second- or third-year students are preferred.
    • Ability to perform mathematical and simple engineering calculations.
    • Knowledge of CADD, GIS, and MS Office software.
    • Willingness to learn, problem solve, and adapt to new tasks.
    • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 60 pounds.
    • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and on uneven terrain.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Lincoln, Nebraska.
    • Modality: On-site.
    • Schedule: Must be able to work at least 10 hours per week during the school term.
    • Full-time employment may be available during scheduled school breaks.
    • This is a paid internship.
