About the role#
The Geospatial Data Science team at the National Laboratory of the Rockies is seeking a year-round intern for a 6 to 12 month term. You will support research at the intersection of energy deployment, big data science, and geospatial modeling. The team develops algorithms to evaluate energy technologies like solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower. You will work alongside geospatial scientists, software developers, and policy analysts to solve complex challenges in energy siting and adoption.
What you'll do#
- Manipulate multiple data sources, models, and software tools within scientific and engineering workflows.
- Prepare and process geospatial data using open-source desktop software and programmatic methods.
- Conduct background research on data sets and current modeling approaches.
- Develop literature reviews under the guidance of research scientists.
- Write Python scripts to conduct analysis and visualize data.
- Operate within distributed computing environments, including internal servers, high-performance computing systems, and the Cloud.
What you'll need#
- A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
- Current enrollment in or recent graduation (within the last 12 months) from a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD program in Geography/GIS, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- An online code repository like GitHub with publicly visible projects, or a cover letter explanation for its absence.
- Independent programming experience using Python and libraries such as geopandas, numpy, scipy, shapely, and pyproj.
- Proficiency in geospatial analysis and modeling using open-source tools like QGIS.
- Experience with geographic transformations and projections.
- Strong critical thinking, research, and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a collaborative, dispersed team environment.
- Preferred: Experience with Linux/Unix, collaborative code development, Machine Learning, GDAL, and big geospatial data processing.
