    About the role#

This co-op position sits at the intersection of optics, atomic physics, and data science. You will join the QPU Build team to help design and implement system-wide features for our neutral-atom quantum computer. You will work hands-on in the lab to characterize the optical systems that trap and control atoms, turning your measurements into insights that improve the machine. This role provides a view of how a quantum computer is designed and built.

    What you'll do#

    • Design and run measurements to characterize optical components and systems, including lasers, beam-shaping optics, and atom-trapping setups.
    • Assist with building, aligning, and troubleshooting optical setups in the lab.
    • Analyze measurement and experimental data using the Python scientific stack.
    • Build tools and workflows to make results reproducible.
    • Turn your findings into clear, actionable feedback for the team.
    • Collaborate with physicists and engineers to integrate optical subsystems into the broader atomic physics pipeline.
    • Help identify ways to improve performance and reliability.

    What you'll need#

    • Pursuing or recently completed a degree in physics, optics/photonics, engineering, or a related field.
    • Hands-on optics lab experience, such as alignment, beam characterization, and working with lasers or optical components.
    • Strong Python programming skills for data analysis using NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, and Matplotlib.
    • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
    • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
    • Evidence of independent work.
    • A solid foundation in physics and mathematics.
    • Experience with holography, spatial light modulators, diffractive optics, or metasurfaces is preferred.
    • Experience with CAD design in Autodesk Inventor or optical design in Zemax is a plus.
    • Exposure to atomic physics or quantum computing experiments is helpful.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Boston, Massachusetts.
    • Modality: This is an on-site role.
    • Status: Full-time, paid.
    • Term: Rolling.
