About the role#
The Volunteer and Internship Manager oversees the Zoo's volunteer and internship programs. You will foster an environment where volunteers feel engaged and empowered. This role sits on the Education Leadership Team, helping to set goals and direction for the department. You will manage a corps of over 300 active volunteers and docents, alongside a paid internship program in animal care and education.
What you'll do#
- Develop and implement strategies to recruit, train, and retain volunteers.
- Oversee scheduling, communications, and feedback systems to keep volunteers informed.
- Expand the paid internship program and develop partnerships with educational institutions and community organizations.
- Design hands-on learning experiences in coordination with Animal Care and Education teams.
- Supervise two full-time staff members and manage the annual program budget.
- Monitor program data to measure impact and identify areas for improvement.
What you'll need#
- At least 3 years of experience in volunteer management, program management, community engagement, or education.
- Demonstrated commitment to the value of volunteer engagement.
- Experience managing staff or leading teams.
- Proficiency in volunteer management software and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations calmly and follow established protocols.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

- Salary range: $46,363 to $51,916 USD
- Requirements: Candidates must pass a criminal background check, drug screening, and tuberculosis (TB) screening. The role requires the ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, or special events.
