About the role#
The Tobacco Control and Prevention Intern gains hands-on public health experience through community outreach, education, and policy research. This role supports the Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion program by assisting with tobacco retailer compliance and data analysis. You will work in a hybrid environment, balancing remote tasks with required in-person attendance at the Portland office.
What you'll do#
- Coordinate educational activities and participate in community outreach events to support regulatory compliance.
- Assist tobacco retailers with policy adherence and support the implementation team with logistics.
- Collaborate with communications staff to design campaign effectiveness surveys and develop short-term mini-campaigns.
- Review and assist in retailer training sessions and translate data into reports.
- Partner with internal and external work groups on the vape disposal project to identify solutions for toxic waste issues.
- Work with the policy analyst to finalize retailer data, including inspection results, language preferences, and sales metrics.
What you'll need#
- Completion of an undergraduate degree in Public Health, Social Work, Community Health, Communications, or a related field.
- Current enrollment in an accredited institution leading to a post-graduate degree or equivalent program.
- One year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Master-level students in Public Health, Health Promotion, Community Health, Epidemiology, or other health professions are preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: 847 NE 19th Ave, Portland, OR 97201.
- Work Modality: Hybrid, including one mandatory in-person day per week.
- Pay Rate: $24 per hour.
- Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
