About the role#
The Biocatalysis Intern position is part of the Future Talent Program within the Small Molecule Process Research and Development Department. This internship offers the opportunity to work alongside company scientists in a laboratory environment to impact drug discovery, development, and manufacturing. You will contribute to the invention, development, and implementation of biocatalysts while gaining firsthand knowledge of how research labs progress medicines and vaccines.
What you'll do#
- Contribute to the development of novel proteins, enzyme-catalyzed reactions, and biocatalytic transformations.
- Focus on solving key challenges in biocatalysis, enzyme engineering, microfluidics, and fermentation.
- Participate in departmental and project team meetings to gain perspective on the pharmaceutical industry.
- Maintain accurate electronic notebook records and adhere to safe laboratory practices.
- Present research results in both oral and written formats.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior in a Bachelor's program, or as a graduate student in a Master's or Ph.D. program.
- Fields of study include Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or Material Science.
- Completion of at least two years of undergraduate study by June 2027.
- Availability to work full-time for 11-12 weeks starting in May or June 2027.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred.
- Interest in organic chemistry, enzymology, protein design, directed evolution, chemical engineering, or high throughput screening.
- Knowledge of molecular biology, synthetic biology, and materials science.
- Basic laboratory skills and experience with analytical techniques such as HPLC, NMR, MS, and spectrophotometric methods.
- Familiarity with fermentation process development, PCR techniques, biochemical assays, and data analysis.
- Experience with programming languages like Python or MATLAB and structural data visualization tools.
