About the role#
Moffatt & Nichol is hiring a Structural Intern for our Summer 2027 program. This is a temporary, full-time role based in our Oakland or Walnut Creek offices. You will support project teams by producing drawings, models, and calculations while learning standard engineering workflows. Work is performed under direct supervision.
What you'll do#
- Analyze and design marine structures including piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, and offshore platforms.
- Work with timber, structural steel, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, aluminum, and composite materials.
- Assist in developing plans, specifications, reports, and construction quantity estimates.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, scientists, and project managers on multi-discipline projects.
- Perform structural site inspections and prepare associated reports.
- Assist with office construction administration, including the review of shop drawings and technical submittals.
- Help resolve design problems through field investigations and checking design computations.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
- Status as a student entering the final year of your degree program following the summer of employment.
- Completion of coursework in Engineering Materials, Structural Analysis, and at least one material design course (reinforced concrete or structural steel).
- Legal ability to obtain employment in the U.S.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
- Preference is given to Master’s degree students, those with an EIT certification, and those with previous internship experience.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, SAP2000, LPile, Mathcad, and Bluebeam is preferred.

- This position is located on-site in Oakland, CA or Walnut Creek, CA.
- This is a paid internship.
- The role requires the ability to perform field investigations, which may involve navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.
