About the role#
Moffatt & Nichol is seeking a Structural Engineering intern to support our project teams in Long Beach. You will assist design engineers with the engineering and administration of marine and waterfront infrastructure projects. This role involves both office-based design tasks and field-based inspection work.
What you'll do#
- Perform structural analysis and design for marine structures such as piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, and offshore platforms.
- Work with materials including timber, structural steel, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, aluminum, and composites.
- Assist in the development of project plans, specifications, calculations, and technical reports.
- Help resolve design problems through field investigations, detailed design work, and checking computations.
- Coordinate specific design aspects within multi-discipline projects alongside architects, scientists, and project managers.
- Calculate construction quantity estimates.
- Support construction administration by reviewing shop drawings and technical submittals.
- Conduct structural site inspections and prepare formal inspection reports.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
- Must be entering your final year of study following the summer of employment.
- Completion of coursework in Engineering Materials, Structural Analysis, and at least one material design course (reinforced concrete or structural steel).
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
- Preference is given to students on a Master’s degree track or those with a previous related internship.
- Preference is given to candidates working toward or holding an EIT certification.
- Experience with AutoCAD, SAP2000, LPile, Mathcad, and Bluebeam is preferred.
- Ability to perform field investigations is preferred.

- Employment: Temporary full-time with a rolling term.
- Compensation: $24.00 to $31.00 per hour, depending on education and experience.
