About the role#
This position is a 6-month co-op assignment beginning in January 2027. You will work on-site in Rochester, New York, focusing on diffraction gratings. The role balances theoretical modeling with hands-on laboratory work. You will report to the Senior Engineering Manager.
What you'll do#
- Set up, align, and run optical test beds to characterize diffraction grating efficiency and wavefront quality.
- Use optical design software and scripting languages to model grating behavior and analyze data.
- Inspect optical components using microscopes and interferometers.
- Document test procedures, compile data, and present your findings to the engineering team.
- Handle delicate optical components and work in cleanroom environments, which may require wearing protective gear.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Completed coursework in physical optics, wave mechanics, or laser physics.
- Hands-on experience in a university optics laboratory or a previous internship.
- Familiarity with laser safety practices.
- Ability to perform tasks requiring fine motor skills, extended standing, and occasional lifting of 20 to 50 lbs.
