About the role#
As a Summer Research Program intern in the Laser Communications Group, you will contribute to a lasercom prototype build program. You will own a specific technical project, which you will complete and present by the end of the term. This role involves hands-on research alongside scientists and engineers, as well as participation in professional development workshops and networking events.
What you'll do#
- Work on software development, embedded systems design, and control systems development.
- Conduct tasks related to fiber optics, photonics, and data analysis.
- Apply academic knowledge to research projects.
- Present your project results at the end of the internship.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate program in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics.
- Experience working in a fiber optic or photonics laboratory environment.
- Ability to learn new technical areas quickly and apply that knowledge to solve problems.
- Proficiency in either embedded systems, control, digital and analog circuit design and testing, OR proficiency with C/C++, Python, or similar languages.
- Excellent communication skills to explain technical solutions to engineers in other disciplines.
- Desired background includes signal processing for real systems, model-based simulations, Linux real-time operating systems, or software interfaces with hardware peripherals.
- U.S. citizenship is required, and you must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.

- Term: Summer 2027 (typically 10 to 12 weeks).
- Modality: On-site.
- This is a paid, full-time position.
- Housing support and shuttle transportation are available for eligible non-local interns.
