About the role#
The Active Optical Systems Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory develops optical and infrared sensor technologies for national security. As an IT/Systems Administrator Co-Op, you will support the group’s infrastructure and daily technical operations. You will report to a mentor who previously completed his own co-ops within this specific group.
What you'll do#
- Support day-to-day IT needs, including troubleshooting and system maintenance.
- Install, configure, and troubleshoot Windows and Linux operating systems.
- Manage network configurations and keep software licenses current.
- Assist with implementing security measures that follow government and Laboratory policies.
- Build and modify systems that support research projects.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Networking, or IT degree program.
- Completion of at least 1-2 years of undergraduate study.
- Knowledge of Windows, Windows Server, Unix/Linux, and macOS.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and networking challenges.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, OS imaging tools like kickstart or Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, and BitLocker.
- Basic knowledge of scripting languages such as bash, Perl, or python.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Experience in mission critical environments is a plus.
- Ability to take initiative and work with minimal direction.

- Location: Lexington, Massachusetts.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: This is an on-site, full-time position.
- Note: U.S. citizenship is required. The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.
