About the role#
The Legal Aid Society at Metropolitan Family Services offers an internship focused on litigation exposure and direct legal services. You will work with attorneys to support vulnerable communities, including victims of domestic violence, the elderly, and those facing housing or economic instability. This role involves active participation in the legal process, from initial client interviews to court proceedings.
What you'll do#
- Research case law and legal procedures to support client representation.
- Assist attorneys with client interviews and negotiations.
- Draft legal documents, such as motions, pleadings, and discovery materials.
- Maintain client files and manage case documentation.
- Collaborate with staff to serve a diverse client population.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a JD program.
- A strong interest in public interest law and direct services.
- Research and writing skills.
- Effective communication skills for working with clients and colleagues.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Patience and professionalism when interacting with clients.
- Preference is given to candidates with Spanish fluency or an Illinois 711 license.
