    About the role#

    The Mechanical Engineering Intern joins the Custom Equipment Group in Roanoke, Virginia. You will provide hands-on engineering support to improve manufacturing safety, quality, and equipment uptime. This is a full-time, paid position for the Summer 2027 term, requiring on-site work Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

    What you'll do#

    • Support capital project execution through equipment layouts, design concepts, and vendor quoting.
    • Create and revise 2D drawings and 3D models using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD.
    • Design mechanical solutions for manufacturing equipment, including fixtures, brackets, guards, and ergonomic improvements.
    • Conduct equipment troubleshooting and root-cause analysis by gathering data, taking field measurements, and collecting operator feedback.
    • Develop and organize equipment maintenance resources such as machine manuals, spare parts lists, and preventive maintenance instructions.
    • Collaborate with maintenance, operations, and engineering teams to track project progress and implement equipment improvements.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in a bachelor's degree program for Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a Quality-related engineering field.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills.
    • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
    • A Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification is preferred.
    • Experience in a manufacturing environment is a plus.
