About the role#
The Macy's 8-week Summer Internship Program in Assortment Planning offers exposure to retail strategy, merchandising, and data-driven decision-making. You will gain hands-on experience supporting sales, margin, and inventory productivity. The team analyzes product performance, customer demand, and vendor metrics to ensure the right products are available in the right quantities. You will work closely with Merchants and cross-functional teams to develop strategies that maximize profitability and meet customer needs across store and e-commerce channels.
What you'll do#
- Receive professional development through hands-on learning and collaborative projects.
- Build relationships with other interns, business leaders, and team colleagues.
- Attend and participate in weekly business meetings to review and recap sales performance.
- Analyze product performance data and business trends to identify opportunities.
- Make recommendations based on data and trends.
- Support the development of assortment plans aligned with business and promotional strategies.
- Partner with Merchants and cross-functional teams to support strategic assortment initiatives.
- Assess assortment effectiveness by channel.
- Conduct competitive and business trend analysis.
- Analyze reports related to channel demand, category performance, vendor performance, and product trends.
- Support allocation and inventory management processes.
- Assist with business recaps and presentations by providing insights and recommendations.
- Demonstrate agility in reacting to in-season sales trends.
- Maintain regular, dependable attendance and punctuality.
What you'll need#
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Junior standing (rising senior) pursuing a bachelor's degree.
- Strong academic record (3.0 GPA preferred).
- All majors are welcome to apply.
- Strong retail math, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to analyze sales, margin, inventory turn, sell-through, and other key retail performance metrics.
- Advanced Excel skills including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and formulas.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work with large datasets.
- Basic understanding of merchandising and assortment planning principles.
- Strong business acumen and curiosity about the retail industry.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to independently organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects.
- Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and relationship management skills.
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
