About the role#
This role supports the daily operations, educational programs, and public events of the Trackman Planetarium. You will help create engaging and accessible astronomy experiences for visitors of all ages. This position provides hands-on experience in science education, public engagement, and event coordination.
What you'll do#
- Greet and usher visitors to the planetarium for events and field trips.
- Supervise school-age children, educators, and chaperones during field trip events.
- Assist with the coordination and facilitation of planetarium shows, camps, classes, and community outreach.
- Engage audiences on topics in astronomy, physics, and aerospace.
- Present the history of the Cronin Schoolhouse to visitors.
- Research show content, present lectures, and lead hands-on demonstrations.
- Create promotional materials including flyers, brochures, and digital displays.
- Manage social media efforts to increase event awareness.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety in the planetarium environment.
- Operate the digital projection system and assist with the Traveling Trackman Planetarium at local schools.
- Track event attendance and manage dome bookings using 25Live.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment at JJC in at least 6 credit hours with a GPA of 2.0 or above.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Availability on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings.
- Strong public speaking, verbal, written, and customer service skills.
- Computer literacy and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to work well with K-12 students, adults with special needs, and diverse community members.
- Interest in astronomy, science, or education.
- Professionalism and commitment to JJC core values.
- Experience with classroom or group management is preferred.
- Proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for off-campus travel.
- Ability to lift and move equipment and navigate indoor and outdoor areas.
Location & details#
- Location: Joliet, Illinois.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Part-time, up to 20 hours per week during semesters and up to 28 hours during breaks.
- Note: The planetarium environment may include dark spaces, flashing lights, motion visuals, and immersive sound effects.
