About the role#
The External Affairs Intern will support strategic growth initiatives and external engagement activities during the Summer 2027 program. This role provides exposure to how business unit strategies are developed, communicated, and executed. You will work on real-world assignments that build practical skills in business strategy, government affairs, and community relations.
What you'll do#
- Assist in the development of communications materials, messaging plans, and outreach strategies.
- Use artificial intelligence and emerging technology to conduct research, develop intelligence reports, and prepare issue briefs.
- Monitor industry trends and community perspectives to identify emerging opportunities and stakeholder concerns.
- Prepare reports, executive summaries, and presentations for business unit leadership.
- Support public information meetings, community outreach, and stakeholder engagement for infrastructure projects.
- Assist with the planning and execution of employee events and community programs.
- Participate in outreach efforts with customers, local officials, and community organizations.
- Attend public meetings, hearings, and community forums.
- Support relationship management efforts to strengthen partnerships across the service territory.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a bachelor degree program in Political Science, Communications, Public Relations, Public Administration, Business, or a related field at a 4-year university.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to travel to locations in Iowa as needed.
- Capacity to work both independently and within teams.
- Ability to take direction and act quickly.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality, innovation, performance, collaboration, courage, and integrity.
- Authorization to work in the United States for any employer.

- Term: Summer 2027 (12-week program).
