About the role#
This internship supports the development and evaluation of gamma-ray computed tomography (CT) methods for nuclear fuel examination. You will work with the research team to simulate radiation transport and analyze imaging performance. This position is located at the Materials and Fuels Complex campus and follows a 4x10 work schedule.
What you'll do#
- Develop Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations for gamma CT instruments.
- Generate simulated projection data, known as sinograms, for various source distributions and geometries.
- Implement and evaluate variance-reduction methods, such as importance sampling, to improve computational efficiency.
- Apply image-reconstruction algorithms to simulated data.
- Evaluate image quality using quantitative metrics like signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio.
- Investigate how acquisition parameters, including angular projections and detector dwell time, affect reconstruction quality.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a PhD program at an ABET-accredited university studying Nuclear Engineering.
- A minimum overall 3.0 GPA.
- Previous completion of a BEA internship within the MFC Reactors and Chief Technologist Group.
- Experience with MCNP, SCALE, or ADVANTG is preferred.
- Ability to frequently stand, walk, sit, and lift up to 35 pounds.
- Required documents include a current resume or CV, unofficial transcripts, and a class schedule showing credit hours.
Location & details#
- Location: Idaho Falls, ID.
- Modality: On-site.
