About the role#
HNTB is seeking Intern Engineers for the Summer 2027 term in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. This full-time, on-site role supports the Massachusetts Rail & Transit department on complex infrastructure projects. You will work alongside engineering teams to assist with research, design, and documentation tasks related to your assigned specialty.
What you'll do#
You will assist engineers with various project tasks, including the preparation of drawings and reports. Depending on your focus area, your responsibilities may include:
- Track Engineering: Assisting with rail layout, alignment studies, grading, and drainage design.
- Communications Systems: Supporting the design of fiber optic networks, radio systems, and passenger information systems.
- Signals and Train Control: Aiding in the development of circuits for switches and crossings, and supporting safety documentation.
- Traction Power: Supporting the design of substations, switchgear, and power distribution systems.
- Overhead Contact Systems: Contributing to catenary system layouts and supporting field surveys of existing installations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program.
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of engineering, geometric, and algebraic principles.
- Ability to perform basic engineering calculations and organize information for technical documents.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
- Understanding of introductory shop drawing and submittal procedures.
We prefer candidates who have completed at least two years of an engineering program in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering. Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation is also preferred, along with an interest in transportation and infrastructure.

- Compensation: The pay range for this position in Massachusetts is $25.28 to $37.92 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.
