About the role#
This internship is part of the Rail Operations Modeling and Planning (ROMP) team. You will work on projects involving light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail, intercity passenger rail, high-speed rail, and freight railroads. This role focuses on passenger, freight, and light rail transit operations. You will help our team analyze rail operations and simulate transit systems to inform national and metro rail network decisions.
What you'll do#
- Assist engineering teams with daily tasks and project duties.
- Support research, development, and design efforts for ongoing projects.
- Prepare engineering drawings and technical documents.
- Help develop planning and construction studies using operations and data-based perspectives.
- Perform other engineering-related tasks as assigned.
What you'll need#
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program (Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical).
- Ability to perform basic engineering calculations and organize information for documents.
- Understanding of engineering, geometric, and algebraic principles.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to accept and apply direction from supervisors and peers.
- Familiarity with introductory shop drawing and submittal procedures.
- Relevant coursework in railway engineering.
We prefer candidates who have completed at least two years of their engineering program. Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation is a plus. We also value a strong interest in transportation and infrastructure, knowledge of programming languages, experience working with large data sets, and familiarity with transportation agencies.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship for Summer 2027.
- The role is based on-site in either Boston, Massachusetts, or Chicago, Illinois.
