About the role#
Hillis-Carnes Engineering Associates is hiring a Geotechnical College Intern for the Summer 2027 term in Ashland, Virginia. This full-time, on-site role is open to students in Civil Engineering and related disciplines. We offer two levels of internship based on your academic progress. Freshman and Sophomores focus on field tasks, while Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students balance field work with technical office assignments.
What you'll do#
You will work on construction materials testing projects, including soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel. Your daily tasks include:
- Perform field observation.
- Collect samples and test construction materials.
- Document testing results.
- Assist with soil classification and report creation.
What you'll need#
- Valid driver's license, a satisfactory driving record, and a reliable vehicle for travel to construction sites.
- Ability to lift or move 60 to 80 pounds, such as concrete samples or nuclear gauges.
- Proficiency with basic mathematical procedures and measurement tools.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Willingness to complete a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
