    About the role#

    This internship is part of the HPC and AI Data Center Administration team. You will work alongside systems administrators who manage the high-performance computing and AI laboratory systems used across Hewlett Packard Enterprise engineering. Your work focuses on the security, monitoring, and visibility of these systems. You will produce a system visibility baseline and create tools and documentation that the team will continue to use after your internship concludes.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist with inventory validation for HPC and AI lab systems.
    • Review monitoring, logging, and vulnerability scanning coverage across a heterogeneous system fleet.
    • Identify gaps in agent deployment, log forwarding, scan inclusion, and system ownership records.
    • Build scripts, reports, or dashboards that summarize security visibility.
    • Document hardening expectations and practical checklists for lab systems.
    • Work with system administrators to validate findings and prioritize follow-up work.
    • Present project results and recommendations at the end of the internship.

    What you'll need#

    • Currently enrolled in a degree program in cybersecurity, computer science, software engineering, information systems, computer engineering, network administration, or a related technical field.
    • Working comfort on the Linux command line, including navigating filesystems, editing configuration files, inspecting services and logs, managing permissions, and troubleshooting without a GUI.
    • Demonstrated hands-on Linux exposure through coursework, a personal lab, or prior professional experience.
    • Scripting ability in Python or Bash.
    • Familiarity with SSH key management, sudo, system services, and package management.
    • Understanding of logging, monitoring, and vulnerability scanning concepts such as syslog, log forwarding, and agent-based collection.
    • Exposure to Git or GitHub in a collaborative workflow.
    • Working understanding of TCP/IP networking, firewalls, DNS, and Linux permissions.
    • Experience with security or monitoring tools like Zabbix, Nessus, OpenSCAP, Wazuh, Splunk, Elastic, or Nmap.
    • Exposure to configuration management or automation tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Salt.
    • Ability to organize technical findings clearly in writing.
    • Interest in cybersecurity, infrastructure, monitoring, automation, and large-scale compute environments.

    Location & details#

    • This is a full-time, paid internship.
    • The role is hybrid, with a requirement to work on average 2 days per week from an HPE office.
    • You must be able to work fully onsite in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, for the duration of the internship.
    • Locations include Bloomington, Minnesota, and Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
