About the role#
The Insurance Authorization Intern supports the daily operations of the Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute. You will work on-site to track patient authorizations, manage insurance data, and assist with administrative tasks. This is a full-time, paid internship that offers exposure to the healthcare billing process and clinical office workflows.
What you'll do#
- Monitor incoming insurance authorizations and follow up on pending items.
- Log authorization numbers, expiration dates, and service coverage details.
- Communicate with insurance companies to verify patient benefits.
- Update the office Smart Board and internal dashboards daily.
- Enter insurance information into databases and document results in the electronic health record.
- Maintain records in compliance with HIPAA privacy regulations.
- Generate reports on authorization trends and insurance denials.
- Coordinate with billing teams, front desk staff, and clinicians.
- Assist with clerical tasks including scanning, filing, and emailing.
- Identify ways to improve tracking and update procedures.
- Create and deliver a final PowerPoint presentation summarizing your experience and professional development.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited college, university, or technical institution.
- Recent graduates within the last 12 months are also eligible.
- Proof of good academic standing.
- Unofficial transcripts, academic class schedule, and a recent resume or cover letter.
- Applicable course syllabus if you are seeking academic credit.
