About the role#
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression is hiring a Fellow for our Student Press Freedom Initiative and Campus Rights Advocacy team. This is a full-time, two-year fellowship designed for recent graduates who are considering law school, graduate school, or other professional paths. You will report to the Student Press Program Manager and Counsel while gaining exposure to our work in litigation, policy reform, and advocacy. This position involves a moderate amount of travel, roughly 20-25 percent of the time, and requires some work on evenings and weekends to support our 24-hour hotline.
What you'll do#
- Build relationships with student journalists, their advisers, and their publications.
- Help manage case intake and respond to emergency requests through our hotline.
- Research and write advocacy materials, including letters to universities.
- Create and host training programs, conference presentations, and educational resources.
- Act as a primary press contact for specific cases, including conducting media interviews.
- Write blog posts and op-eds regarding our ongoing cases.
What you'll need#
- A bachelor degree in a field such as Communications, Journalism, Political Science, History, English, or Business Administration.
- 1-2 years of post-undergraduate experience, though exceptional candidates with less experience are encouraged to apply.
- A strong grasp of student press freedom issues and the First Amendment.
- Excellent research, writing, and public speaking abilities.
- High attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- A journalism or student press background is preferred.
Location & details#
This position is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, though candidates preferring Washington, D.C. will be considered. We operate on a hybrid schedule that requires a mix of in-office and remote work. The salary range for this role is $50,000 to $60,000. This is a paid, full-time position that does not offer sponsorship.
