About the role#
As a Mechanical Engineer Intern, you will design and build systems that house sensing and compute platforms for autonomous robots. You will work on the full lifecycle of hardware, from initial CAD design to field support. You will collaborate with electrical and systems engineers to create integrated, ruggedized hardware that functions in real-world environments.
What you'll do#
- Design mechanical structures, including enclosures, compute frames, and chassis.
- Develop sensor mounts and mechanical interfaces.
- Implement IP-rated solutions using gaskets, seals, and coatings for dust and water protection.
- Manage thermal mitigation strategies like heat sinks, fans, and airflow guides.
- Build SolidWorks CAD assemblies and run FEA and thermal simulations.
- Apply principles of DFM, DFA, and DFS to your designs.
- Conduct testing for shock, vibration, thermal cycles, and ingress.
- Create mechanical drawings, BOMs, and assembly instructions.
- Work with vendors for hardware procurement and establish QA checks for incoming units.
- Investigate mechanical failures and develop protocols for monitoring system health.
What you'll need#
- Current student pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software.
- Familiarity with FEA and thermal modeling tools.
- Experience designing hardware that survives vibration, shock, and environmental exposure.
- Knowledge of CNC, sheet metal, and additive manufacturing workflows.
- Ability to integrate mechanical systems with compute, sensors, and power electronics.
- Experience with mechanical debugging, vibration tables, and thermal test setups.
- Capability to contribute to electrical, sensing, or embedded computing tasks.
Location & details#
- Location: Boston, Massachusetts
- Work Modality: On-site
- Commitment: Full-time
- Type: Paid Internship
