About the role#
This internship offers students the chance to work alongside experienced professionals in the energy sector. You will receive coaching and mentorship while contributing to projects that drive results. This role provides exposure to the daily work of engineers and scientists, offering insight into a professional career in mining and tailings operations.
What you'll do#
As a Mining Engineering student, you will learn skills in mine planning and design. You will support active mine operations, plan for the development of future mine pits, and work on the closure landscape of the Kearl site. Specific tasks include:
- Data analytics and mine fleet assessments
- Pit design and material movement
- Water management
As a Tailings Engineering student, you will join the mine and tailings planning team. You will gain experience in tailings planning, fluid tailings management, fines treatment, and tailings modeling or mass balance. You will work with a multi-disciplinary technical team including mine planning, geotechnical engineering, and reclamation or closure planning.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a similar field.
- Availability for a work term starting in January or May 2027.
- Commitment to return to full-time studies after the work term.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership, initiative, and a commitment to safety.
- Submission of your most recent unofficial transcript is required.
Preferred qualifications include experience with AutoCAD or Deswik, an understanding of engineering drawings, and previous work experience in related industries.

- Locations: Calgary, Edmonton, or the Kearl Site (Alberta).
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Terms: Winter 2027 or Summer 2027.
- Employment: Full-time paid position.
- Note: The role may require occasional trips to the Kearl mine site, including overnight stays in camp.
