The Student Financial Services Counselor serves as a primary resource for prospective and continuing students and their families. This role provides comprehensive support regarding financial aid, billing, and tuition collection, ensuring compliance with institutional, state, and federal policies. The Counselor partners with departments across the university to support enrollment, retention, and student success.
What you'll do#
- Advise students and families on financial aid options, including federal programs, state aid, scholarships, and institutional policies.
- Provide individualized counseling on application procedures, award packaging, academic progress, and loan management.
- Conduct one-on-one appointments regarding current and future aid, study abroad funding, and tuition questions.
- Assist students with billing inquiries, including payment plans, late fees, and refunds.
- Package financial aid for students in accordance with institutional guidelines and Department of Education criteria.
- Review and verify financial aid documentation and perform need analysis.
- Communicate regularly with students and families via email, phone, and CRM systems to provide timely updates.
- Support the collection of student tuition and manage delinquent accounts, guiding families through resolution options.
- Collaborate with campus partners to resolve outstanding balances and maintain financial accuracy.
What you'll need#
- A Bachelor's degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
- Minimum of two years of direct experience in the student financial services functional area within a college or university setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of financial aid eligibility requirements and programs.
- Knowledge of student account processes, delinquent account management, and remissions.
- Proficiency in computer operating systems and software, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to handle sensitive and confidential data with discretion.
- Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and solve complex problems.
