About the role#
The City of Lakewood offers a Therapeutic Recreation Internship designed to provide practical, goal-oriented experience under the supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). This position addresses all NCTRC Job Task Analysis areas to prepare interns for certification exams and entry-level roles. Interns work with individuals of all ages who have various disabilities, including intellectual, physical, behavioral, and mental health challenges. This is a paid, part-time position with an hourly rate of $14.81.
What you'll do#
- Assist with planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating therapeutic programs.
- Conduct participant assessments and identify appropriate goals.
- Plan and implement in-services and staff training.
- Complete a special project determined in collaboration with your supervisor.
- Assist with the planning of Camp Paha and summer programming.
- Monitor program registrations and gather feedback from participants and staff.
- Participate in department and team meetings.
What you'll need#
- Current senior undergraduate or graduate student in Therapeutic Recreation, special education, adaptive Physical Education, or a related field.
- Working toward completion of NCTRC requirements.
- Minimum 3.0 G.P.A. in Therapeutic Recreation coursework.
- CPR/AED/First Aid Certification (must be obtained within 30 days of hire).
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Ability to pass a CBI/FBI background check and clear the TRAILS registry.
- Must provide college transcripts.
- For summer interns, must furnish written proof of at least 480 contact hours supervising children up to age 18.
- Reliable transportation to travel between varying work sites.
