The Therapeutic Recreation Internship with the City of Lakewood provides a practical, goal-oriented experience designed to prepare students for the NCTRC Certification Exam and entry-level professional positions. Interns work under the supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) to serve individuals with disabilities ranging from age 2 through adulthood. This role involves direct leadership, program management, and exposure to all aspects of community-based therapeutic recreation.
What you'll do#
- Assist with planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating therapeutic programs.
- Conduct participant assessments and identify appropriate, goal-oriented objectives.
- Plan and implement in-services and staff training sessions.
- Complete one special project in collaboration with your supervisor.
- Assist with planning Camp Paha and broader summer programming.
- Participate in department, team, and staff meetings while maintaining accurate program documentation.
What you'll need#
- Current senior undergraduate or graduate student status in Therapeutic Recreation, special education, adaptive Physical Education, or a related field, working toward NCTRC requirements.
- Minimum 3.0 G.P.A. in Therapeutic Recreation coursework.
- A valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Ability to obtain CPR/AED/First Aid Certification within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to pass a CBI/FBI background check and clear the TRAILS registry.
- Ability to provide college transcripts and written proof of at least 480 contact hours supervising children up to age 18.
