About the role#
As an Automation and Controls Engineer Intern at Charter Steel, you will gain hands-on experience by supporting automation projects and learning the steelmaking process. You will work directly with engineers to troubleshoot automated systems, develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) software, and contribute to design enhancements. This role helps you build technical communication and project management skills in a manufacturing environment.
What you'll do#
- Design, develop, and execute projects within an HMI environment.
- Support real-time manufacturing through control system programming and automation.
- Create and improve operator graphical user interfaces (GUIs) to support production workflow.
- Integrate new manufacturing technologies into HMI systems.
- Collaborate with engineers and operations teams to troubleshoot, test, and improve control systems.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a four-year degree program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Current standing of at least a Sophomore level with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work well in a team and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Preferred: Training in PLC languages or experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft SQL, and Wonderware InTouch.

- Location: Saukville, Wisconsin.
- Schedule: This is a year-round, on-site internship starting in January 2027.
- Status: This position is paid and full-time.
