About the role#
The Director of Student Career Advising provides strategic leadership and individualized guidance to support medical students in achieving their professional goals. This role oversees a comprehensive program that prepares students for specialty selection, residency applications, and the transition into graduate medical education. You will serve as a trusted advisor to students and a key partner to faculty, residency program leaders, and institutional leadership. This position requires collaborative leadership to create an integrated environment that prepares students for successful careers in medicine.
What you'll do#
- Provide individualized, longitudinal career advising to medical students.
- Guide students through specialty exploration, career assessment, and informed decision-making.
- Assist students in evaluating specialty competitiveness and developing strategic residency application plans.
- Advise on career pathways in clinical medicine, research, public health, and healthcare leadership.
- Support students facing academic, personal, or professional challenges.
- Lead institutional residency advising initiatives, including workshops on ERAS preparation, personal statements, and interview strategies.
- Coordinate mock interview programs and residency readiness assessments.
- Design and improve a comprehensive career advising curriculum with established milestones.
- Recruit, train, and support faculty specialty advisors and physician mentors.
- Collect and analyze residency match outcomes and student engagement metrics to identify trends.
- Prepare annual reports and presentations for medical school leadership.
- Ensure advising services align with LCME accreditation standards.
What you'll need#
- Master's degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs, healthcare administration, education, public health, or a related field.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in medical education, student affairs, career development, or residency advising.
- Experience advising medical, health professions, or graduate students.
- Demonstrated experience developing and leading student-focused programs.
- Knowledge of medical education pathways, residency application processes, and national Match programs.
- Strong counseling, coaching, and student development skills.
- Exceptional communication abilities and experience managing complex projects.
- Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and institutional leaders.
- Commitment to student success, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Doctoral degree, experience in an LCME-accredited school, and knowledge of ERAS, NRMP, and AAMC Careers in Medicine are preferred.

- Location: Los Angeles, California.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Employment Type: Full-time, exempt.
- Compensation: $125,000 to $165,000 annually.
- Status: This position is conditional, contingent upon continued funding from specific grants through December 31, 2027.
