About the role#
The Houston Chronicle is seeking a student journalist to join the Visuals team for a summer 2027 internship. This role focuses on building skills in a major newsroom by producing still photography and short-form video for the website and social platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts. Interns work alongside reporters and editors to document Houston culture and breaking news.
What you'll do#
- Photograph and film daily and enterprise assignments in coordination with editors and reporters.
- Pitch, shoot, edit, and publish short-form videos optimized for social media.
- Find visual storytelling opportunities across various beats and social trends.
- Edit and caption photos and videos with attention to accuracy and engagement.
- Collaborate with the audience team to translate journalism into visual stories.
- Share ideas for visual storytelling to help reach broader audiences.
What you'll need#
- Current status as a junior, senior, or recent graduate.
- Prior experience at a college news publication or a professional news organization.
- A valid driver's license and access to a car.
- Ability to secure housing in Houston.
- Majors in Journalism, Communications, or Media Studies.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship based in Houston, Texas.
- The role operates on a hybrid schedule, requiring at least 3 days per week in the office.
- The term lasts 10 weeks, running from early June to early August.
- Work hours are typically Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend coverage as news demands.
