About the role#
This internship provides on-the-job training and exposure to local government operations within the Buncombe County Strategy and Innovation team. You will receive guidance, training, and mentoring from professional staff as you support organizational priorities and gain practical experience. This position is part-time and offers flexible work arrangements, including on-site, hybrid, or remote options. Note that remote employees must reside within a 2-hour drive of the assigned county facility.
What you'll do#
- Provide entry to intermediate-level services under the supervision of team members.
- Participate in county projects and initiatives through research, data organization, and analysis.
- Coordinate and develop communication materials for projects such as the community survey and departmental business plans.
- Conduct background research to support policy development and collaborate with staff to refine recommendations.
- Help improve strategic procurement and sourcing processes by documenting workflows and exploring best practices.
- Interact with colleagues and internal partners to resolve operational issues.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) program or a related field.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to think critically, work independently, and manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Capability to follow oral and written instructions and build effective working relationships.
- Interest or experience in local government operations, strategic planning, policy development, or organizational improvement is preferred.
