About the role#
As a Mechanical Summer Intern, you will gain hands-on experience in railway operations and maintenance. This program provides an opportunity to apply your academic knowledge to real-world challenges while working alongside experienced professionals. You will develop technical skills and leadership capabilities in a 24/7 industrial environment. This role does not involve the design of railcars or locomotives.
What you'll do#
- Maintain locomotives and freight cars across the BNSF network.
- Assist in supervising, monitoring, and inspecting maintenance and repair work.
- Manage projects and communicate with various stakeholders.
- Shadow mechanical supervisors and craft employees to learn daily operations.
- Ensure the safety of your team in a safety-sensitive work environment.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or related technical fields.
- A cumulative GPA of at least 2.75.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
- Access to reliable transportation for the duration of the internship.
- Ability to work in an indoor or outdoor environment, including extreme weather conditions, and navigate uneven surfaces or climb ladders.
- Ability to distinguish between red, blue, green, yellow, and lunar colors.

- This is a full-time position requiring at least 40 hours per week. The role involves 24/7 operations, which may include nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call shifts. Flexibility to travel and relocate based on business needs is required.
