About the role#
As an Engineering Signal Summer Intern, you will gain hands-on experience with railroad signaling systems. You will work alongside industry experts to apply your academic knowledge to real-world challenges in a safety-sensitive environment. This full-time, paid internship is designed to help you understand the complexities of rail network operations and may serve as a path toward our Management Trainee Program.
What you'll do#
- Inspect, maintain, repair, and construct signal infrastructure, including wayside signals and highway grade crossings.
- Plan and schedule maintenance tasks while verifying the quality of work completed.
- Oversee infrastructure projects, such as terminal expansions and utility crossings, while managing project finances and schedules.
- Communicate with project stakeholders to ensure project goals are met.
- Shadow supervisors and managers to gain practical experience in the field.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or a similar field.
- A cumulative GPA of at least 2.75.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without BNSF sponsorship, now or in the future.
- Reliable transportation and the ability to travel up to 75% of the time.
- Ability to work in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Comfort working outdoors in extreme weather conditions and navigating uneven surfaces.

- This is a full-time position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week.
