About the role#
Bird Construction is seeking a Student Estimator for a 4 or 8 month internship starting in January 2027. This position is based in Ottawa, Ontario. You will manage your own area of responsibility with support from an assigned supervisor and technical mentor.
What you'll do#
- Review project plans, specifications, and related documents to understand project requirements.
- Conduct take-offs from project drawings.
- Develop material and labor quantity estimates.
- Use estimating software to prepare cost estimates, including labor, materials, and subcontractor quotes.
- Assist in preparing bid proposals and organizing estimating information.
- Collaborate with senior estimators and project managers to analyze bids for accuracy.
- Maintain and update cost databases, historical data, and estimating resources.
- Support the team in tracking project bids, opportunities, and market trends.
- Participate in departmental and project meetings.
- Stay current with industry trends, construction technologies, and best practices.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in a degree program such as Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
- Must have at least one semester of education remaining after the internship.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Ability to work in an environment where priorities shift frequently.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to build and maintain positive professional relationships.
- A sense of urgency and a commitment to achieving goals.
- A collaborative mindset and positive attitude.
- Must be an Ideal Team Player who is hungry, humble, and smart.
- Valid residency or work permit.
- Must include a current transcript with your application.
