About the role#
AtkinsRéalis is hiring an ITS/Traffic Engineering Intern for our Raleigh, North Carolina office. This is a paid, part-time internship scheduled for Winter 2027. You will work on-site and gain hands-on experience in traffic signal design, fiber optic communications, utility coordination, and traffic safety studies.
What you'll do#
- Design and develop preliminary and final project plans and drawings.
- Conduct engineering investigations, planning, and analysis with defined scopes.
- Prepare technical reports and assist in drafting specifications and permit applications.
- Research design alternatives, site conditions, regulatory requirements, and industry practices.
- Estimate man-hours, costs, and material quantities.
- Participate in quality control checks and coordinate with other engineering disciplines.
- Perform field observations of construction sites.
- Complete other tasks as assigned by your supervisor.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an Associate's or Bachelor's degree program in a related technical field.
- Completion of at least 60 credit hours toward a civil engineering degree from an ABET accredited program by the start of the internship.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic computer skills for data entry.
- Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations.
- Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation is preferred.

- Compensation: $25 to $31 per hour, based on skills and experience.
