About the role#
American Electric Power offers a 10 to 12 week paid internship program for students interested in utility construction. You will work alongside project managers, engineers, and field personnel to support infrastructure projects across our service territory. This role provides exposure to project controls, procurement, and construction management practices while you gain hands-on experience in both office and field settings.
What you'll do#
- Assist with planning, scheduling, and coordinating construction activities.
- Participate in site visits, project walkdowns, and field observations.
- Support the review of project drawings, specifications, schedules, and permits.
- Document project progress and track materials, equipment, and work orders.
- Help project teams identify and communicate field constraints or project issues.
- Prepare reports, meeting notes, and status updates.
- Collaborate with employees, contractors, and vendors to support project success.
- Promote safety through a Zero Harm mindset.
- Expand your technical skills through training and mentorship.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Project Management, or a related field.
- Completed at least your freshman year of college.
- Graduation date of December 2027 or later.
- Minimum age of 18 years old.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Preferred: 3.0 GPA or higher.
- Preferred: Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Preferred: Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
- Preferred: Demonstrated leadership through academic, extracurricular, or work experiences.
